WELL now at last we know the truth behind the proposed development of the West Way centre by a speculative developer, which the Vale of White Horse District Council has contracted with, to bring forward proposals for development.

Paragraph 6 of the report submitted to the Scrutiny Committee on November 21 reveals that the VWHDC think that the rents on the present West Way Shops are too low. The proposed development will increase the rental value and presumably the business rates. Demolishing Elms Parade and destroying the existent independent businesses that occupy them and the 25 shops in the West Way is a form of ‘economic’ development.

This is supposed to be wonderful for Botley residents.

What they don’t point out is that in reality it is plan to push up the cost of living for local people. Increased rents and rates will be passed onto those who patronise the new development. Great.

Let us give thanks for those who supposedly represent our interests.
