I am writing concerning the Doric development in Botley.

Your report (November 12) that the directors of Doric have also developed shopping complexes in Madrid, Zaragoza and Fulham Broadway has come as a surprise to me. At their presentations in February and September, Doric were, as you would expect, asked repeatedly about developments they had completed elsewhere and the sites they named, both on their display boards and in conversation, did not include any of these. But that is not really the point.

Last week we were told that Doric’s plans had been amended and that we would be ‘very excited’ by their final form but there is no sign of change in what is described today – still 600 students on the roof, still a six-screen cinema, still a basement car park.

As for ‘most people’ being in favour of the Doric plans, my postbag has been full of the subject since last February and my impression has been the opposite. ‘Most people’ think quite rightly that something largely unwanted and in any case grossly out of proportion to the size of the site is being imposed on us. Or would be, unless we stick up for ourselves. And that is what we are doing.
