SALISBURY City Council is set to start work on establishing a further two wildflower areas in the city after the success of those planted in Harnham and Bourne Hill.

One is to go alongside Newbridge Road and the other around the orchard at Bishopdown. The gardens not only support native wildlife such as butterflies, bees and grasshoppers but are cheaper and more sustainable to maintain in the long run.

Graham Dewey, senior groundsman for Salisbury City Council, said: “The first step to creating these wildflower areas will be to see what’s already there.

“This means letting the grass grow from early spring until summertime. The area is going to look a little bit different for a few months - the grass will be longer and weeds might come through as well – but this is a really important first step.

“If we have wildflowers then we’ll retain these then we’ll plan how to support and complement these flowers with seed mixes. If there’s nothing of interest growing naturally then we’ll pick a mix of flowers to suit the area.”
