It was sad to read of the possible closure of the school farm at the Warriner School, Bloxham (November 13).

I was involved with the development of the farm in 1971.

There had been a small farm at the Windmill School in Deddington and the officers and committee of the education department had the initiative to create a purpose-built farm unit at the new Warriner School.

It proved to be a valuable educational resource, not only for the school, but for many primary schools in the area.

I visited the farm on an open day earlier in the year and, despite the rain and the mud, it was obviously providing even more resources to education in the area and the community seemed to be proud of the largest school farm in the country.

It is a welcome break from the ‘exams factories’ referred to recently by the CBI’s director-general.

I note the farm offers six exams but on practical skills and not memory learning.
