9:43pm Friday 24th July 2009

OXFORDSHIRE’S men clin-ched third place in County Week Group 7 when they beat Staffordshire 4-2 in a rain-shortened match at Bexleyheath yesterday.

Because of the threat of bad weather, sets were restricted to the first to four games, and even then Oxon’s three pairings were able to play only two matches each.

Skipper Jon Maskens made it 14 wins out of 14 when he partnered Henry Brown to two constrasting successes.

After a whitewash in their first contest, they were taken to a deciding tie-break in their second.

Joe Levy and Rob Pink had their first outings of the week, and both secured one win with their respective partners Joe Cartledge and Jack Rooney.

Cartledge suffered his first defeat of the week, after splitting up his successful partnership with Maskens, who expressed himself satisfied with the team’s display.

Oxfordshire 4, Staffordshire 2 (Oxon scores first): J Rooney & R Pink lost 2-4, 2-4; won 5-3, 4-1. J Levy & J Cartledge lost 0-4, 0-4; won 4-0, 4-0. J Maskens & H Brown won 4-0, 4-0; won 4-1, 2-4, 10-7 (tiebreak).

Oxfordshire’s women completed a disappointing week when they lost 6-0 to Berkshire in Group 4 at North Oxford. Their young team won just two rubbers all week.
