OXFORDSHIRE'S men and ladies have both won promotion from the LTA Winter County Cup.

The teams won through at Goslings Park in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire to climb into Division 5.

With Lucy Brown and Tom Greenland returning, the squads were much stronger than in previous years.

Oxon got off to good start on, with the men winning 8-2 against Isle of Man, and the ladies 5-4 against Shropshire on the opening day.

It got even better 24 hours later as the men dished out a 9-0 whitwash to Cumbria, while the ladies beat Bedfordshire 6-3 which all but clinched promotion.

The final days’ games were an opportunity to use the full squad and resulted in wins over the Channel Islands – 6-2 for the men and Cumbria 8-1 for the ladies.

Men’s captain Jon Maskens led from the front, winning all five of his matches, as did Harry Brown.

Brown’s sister, Lucy, went one better with six out of six victories for the ladies, a feat matched by teenager Patricia Valimaa.

WOODSTOCK extended their lead at the top of the Thames Valley Winter League Men’s Premier Division following an 8-0 home win against Thame.

They have only dropped one set out of 32 this season and have created a ten-point gap over second-placed Oxford Sports.

Woodstock B moved top of Division 1 after dropping just nine games in eight sets in their 8-0 whitewash at home to Marlow.

In Ladies’ Division 1, Oxford Sports’ 8-0 win away at Oxford City sees them move into second place.

They close the gap on leaders Brackley, who could only draw at home to Wantage.
