Gordon Ross may not be featuring tonight, but he has defied his own expectations by playing such a key role for London Welsh this season.

The former Scottish international fly half, who has been rested for the Amlin Challenge Cup clash at Grenoble, looked as if he would be back-up to new signing Gavin Henson as Welsh fought for Aviva Premiership survival.

But Ross’ own good form and a couple of injuries to Henson have seen him serve the Exiles well.

Asked if he thought he would play as much as he has, Ross replied: “Probably not.

“Obviously with the signing of Gavin, he has done well when he has played, although he has had a couple of injuries.

“I have just got to crack on with my game.

“I know what my role is in the team and I have got to do that to the best of my ability.

“It is going OK sometimes, but we need to try and find a bit more of as plan B and shift it around.

“We need to get our back three in the game, they are very dangerous runners.”

Welsh head coach Lyn Jones has been pleased with Ross’s contribution.

Jones said: “He is the ultimate professional. His preparation is meticulous and it pays dividends for us.

“Five from five with his goal-kicking against Irish is immaculate and he is a nice little controller of the game.”
