There was relief for Grove after their tense 14-5 victory at home to Trowbridge in South West 1 East on Saturday, when it was revealed that scrum half Tom Wells was not as badly injured as first feared.

The game was switched to a neighbouring pitch, while the 20-year-old received prolonged treatment before being taken to hospital.

There was concern about his condition, but he was able to return home the same evening.

Although suffering from bad bruising, he is expected to be playing again in a few weeks.

The injury came early in the game, with Ben Nicholl replacing Wells on resumption.

But it was younger brother Guy Nicholl, who took the initiative and, with some great skill, he weaved his way through the defence to score between the posts.

Centre Harry Carr converted to put Grove 7-0 ahead.

Trowbridge came back very strongly.

But Grove’s defences held out before a penalty took them deep into Trowbridge territory where Guy Nicholl again smashed his way to the visitors’ line for his second try.

This was again converted by Carr and Grove were in the ascendancy at 14-0.

Trowbridge piled on the pressure and were rewarded with a fine try, scored by centre Dave Finlay to take the score to 14-5 at the break.

The second half proved to be a war of attrition with both sides unable to breach the other’s defences.

Grove’s Joe Bellinger was then harshly yellow-carded for an alleged high tackle, but no further scoring took place and the hosts hung on.

Witney splashed to a 23-12 win at Buckingham.

The home side scored a try from the first kick-off through centre Hulston.

Within three minutes, Witney were ahead, as fly half Henry Lamb jinked his way over the line, near enough to the posts for him to add the conversion.

Lamb then landed a penalty, after forward pressure, to make it 10-5.

Witney winger James Monks made a number of strong runs into Buckingham territory.

From there, visiting second rower Charlie Bennett charged over from 30 yards for an unconverted try.

Buckingham pegged it back to 15-12 at half-time with a converted try.

The only points of the second half came from a try by Witney No 8 Joe Rowles and a penalty from Lamb.
