RUGBY UNION: Chippy crush Bicester

Matt Dawson bagged a try treble as Chipping Norton roared into round two of the Oxfordshire Shield with a 43-10 victory over a lacklustre Bicester side at Greystones.

Referee Andrew Graham blew up eight minutes early after Bicester replacement Simon Griffin took a blow to the head and was air-lifted to hospital.

Griffin had brain and neck scans, which showed no damage and he is recovering well.

Chippy went ahead on 18 minutes when No 8 Dawson plunged over from a scrum, and fly half Sam Jackson converted.

Bicester replied when Dan Spencer crossed over from a driven line-out.

Flanker Dean Beauchamp set up Dawson for his second try, then scrum half Matt King brushed off some weak tackling to score, Jackson converting.

Bicester trailed just 19-10 at the break following a try from lock Tim Phipps.

But Chippy surged on, Jackson grabbing their next score.

Dawson swept in for his hat-trick, then replacement Steven Wawrzyniak sped through for a try converted by centre Adam Smith.

Centre Richard Flather notched try No 7, Smith converting.

Gosford All Blacks survived a first-half scare to win 27-10 at Harwell.

Harwell took a deserved lead with a try from scrum half, Rob Froud-Williams, converted by Dave Beaven, who added a penalty soon afterwards.

Gosford were penned back, but managed a penalty from skipper Tim Ellis before half-time, with Harwell tight-head prop Steve Pitts in the sin-bin.

Ellis knocked over four more penalties to make it 15-10, the last after a scything break from James Barrett.

Harwell prop Steve Few and later Gosford’s Chris Bennett were both yellow-carded before the fitter visitors took charge.

Replacement wing Charlie Hooper scored their opening try, converted by Ellis.

An interception from Barrett set up try No 2 for Patch Siret.

Banbury Bulls reached round three of the Midlands Intermediate Cup after a 34-20 win at Stockwood Park.

Carl Daniels, Andrew Joubert, Thomas Wilson, Eddie Phillips and Richard Jeyes scored Banbury’s tries, with Joubert converting three and Mike Smith slotting a penalty.
