Witney are putting their Southern Counties North title hopes ahead of a third trip to Iffley Road in five seasons.

The league leaders are prioritising Saturday's home game with Aylesbury over Sunday’s Oxfordshire Cup semi-final against Wallingford – also at Hailey Road.

Witney, county cup runners-up in 2006 and 2007, will delay maining Sunday’s team until tomorrow night.

Assistant coach John Campbell said: “We’ll see how many walking wounded we have.

“We’re concentrating on the league – it’s ours to lose now.

“I feel the county cup has been a little bit devalued over the last couple of years with lots of sides pulling out.

“I think the Oxfordshire RFU have got to sort something out by getting people to play earlier on.

“Maybe the first game could be before the league season?”

Witney defeated Wallingford 23-10 in last year’s quarter-final at the Hithercroft.

Wallingford head coach Chris Norrington has named a squad for Sunday.

But his selection could change, after tomorrow’s South 1 East game at home to Olney.

He said: “We are putting our efforts into Saturday.

“The lads really want to finish the league with two home wins. It will be very disappointing if we lose either of them.

“That is why we have not put out a weakened team against Olney. We will see how many are standing on Saturday night.”

But he added: “It would be another feather in the cap to make the county final.

“It would be another step forward whoever we play. It is a case of treating Sunday as a final.”
