OXFORD Brookes University are bidding to mark their resurgence with a league and cup double.

A 36-7 win over Nottingham Trent University saw the side lift the BUCS Midlands Conference Cup last week.

Brookes ran in five tries, with Freddie Cracknell, Ben Dickson, Josh Harris, Gabriel Vantaggito and Will Trimmer crossing.

Roddy Giles converted four times and kicked a penalty.

They now also have a shot at league glory in their final game of the season with a Midlands 2B title showdown against University of Nottingham 2nd at North Hinksey Lane next Wednesday.

Head coach Joe Winpenny, whose side beat the University of Northampton 22-5 yesterday, said: “Our main goal was to get promotion and the second aim was to win that cup.

“So it was something we’ve had our eyes on and we knew after Christmas there would be a good opportunity to tick one of the goals off relatively early.

“The boys are so happy with the performance to win so convincingly as well.”

According to Winpenny, the club’s social side had previously got in the way of onfield progression, leading to Brookes taking a year out of the BUCS league in 2011-12.

But they have made great strides since.

Winpenny said: “We have noticed a lot more players are approaching us now pre-application to talk about the set-up. We’re definitely moving in the right direction.”
