OXFORD University Greyhounds resisted a late challenge from Oxford Harlequins to win 22-15 in their Oxfordshire Cup quarter-final at Iffley Road.

An unconverted try from No 8 John Aaron Henry gave the Greyhounds an early lead, but flanker Charlie Ward’s try levelled the scores for Quins.

Seb Haddock’s penalty restored the Students lead, putting them 8-5 ahead at the break.

A penalty by fly half Ollie Jenner brought Quins level again early in the second half.

But the Hounds upped their game, and tries from flanker James Beaufils and lock forward Hugo McPherson, both converted by full back Tom Humberstone, put them into a commanding 22-8 lead.

Quins, for whom No 8 Fotu Latu had a storming game, finished strongly as prop Pete Boulton powered over for a try which Jenner converted.

In a tense finish, Quins were encamped on the students’ line at the final whistle.

The three other quarter-finals all resulted in walk-overs.

Grove conceded to Banbury, while Wallingford and Gosford All Blacks did likewise to Chinnor 2nd and Bicester respectively.

All cited a shortage of front row forwards for their withdrawals.

The draw for February’s semi-finals will be held later this week.
