OXFORD University have been dealt a major blow in their quest for a historic sixth successive Varsity Match victory after it was revealed captain George Messum is ineligible to play.

The 24-year-old, who has one Blue to his name, was named captain earlier this year and has featured in the majority of Oxford's warm-up matches.

But the Dark Blues released a statement last night confirming Messum is not available for selection against Cambridge University on December 10.

A spokesperson said: "Unfortunately OURFC captain George Messum will not be available for selection for the 2015 Varsity Match as he does not meet all of the criteria set out for Blues sport eligibility, agreed by the Oxford and Cambridge Joint Blues Committee."

Messum, who is reading Historical Studies and will continue in his role as club captain, admitted his disappointment.

He said: "I am of course on an individual level disappointed that I will not be able to take the field at Twickenham.

"I cannot put into words how supportive players past and present, along with the management have been throughout this process.

"We have aimed to facilitate an environment of expression of our collective purpose and I know that my own individual disappointment will not affect what this group wishes to achieve."

Oxford's captain for the Varsity Match will be announced on Monday when their 23-man squad will be confirmed.

The Dark Blues face Richmond in their last warm-up game before the Varsity Match at Iffley Road tomorrow.
