OXFORD University’s players have been told to set aside thoughts of becoming record-breakers at Twickenham today.

They go into the 133rd Varsity Match against Cambridge, which kicks-off at 2.30pm, seeking an unprecedented fifth successive Dark Blue win.

It would also see them match Cambridge’s five on the spin, which the Light Blues have achieved twice.

The bookmakers make Oxford massive favourites to beat their previous tally of straight wins, with Ladbrokes installing them at 2-7, Cambridge 5-2 and the draw 20-1.

Half the players on show today played in last year’s one-sided match, which Oxford won 33-15.

But any thoughts that a repeat success is a formality have been dispelled by their head coach, James Wade.

“This will be a much tougher battle and we will have to play our best to win,” said Wade, who is himself seeking a fourth win in this historic fixture.

“The Cambridge pack will be much stronger this year, with the return of the experienced Richard Bartholomew, and they have said they will be targeting our front row.”

This includes loosehead prop Lewis Anderson, who will become the first player to record five Varsity Match wins should Oxford prevail.

Wade added: “A fifth successive victory would be huge for the club, but it’s not been mentioned in team talks.

“The players are focused on just winning this one game. We can’t afford to do anything else.”

Oxford skipper Jacob Taylor, a former Australian sevens international, feels experience will be a key factor.

He said: “The fact we’ve got eight of last year’s starting XV returning has provided stability and four players who won Blues off the bench have graduated into the side.

“We know what we are good at and we know what we’ve got to do.”

One potential matchwinner is scrum half Sam Egerton, winning his fourth Blue.

Last year’s match was a mixed occasion for the 22-year-old law student, as he scored a try, but became the first player in the contest’s 141-year history to be sent off.

Egerton and his Dark Blues colleagues will be hoping to make history of a different kind today.
