MATT Corker says London Welsh are definitely improving as they seek to avoid a tenth straight defeat.

The Exiles’ club captain returns on the bench at home to Gloucester in the LV= Cup tomorrow determined to kick-start their season.

While last week’s 47-7 defeat at Bath appeared to represent more of the same poor form that has blighted Welsh, Corker remains bullish.

“We are definitely getting better, but it is important to get that first win,” he said.

“There is a real focus for us to make sure we get that full 80-minute performance.

“That is what it’s going to take for us to win.”

Corker added: “There were definitely some positives in that second half at Bath.

“Some of our attacking rugby was really good.”

However, the 31-year-old lock admitted the players had to accept their shortcomings if they are to make progress.

“We had a really good look at ourselves after the Bath game,” he said.

“We are very honest as a group. We are not hiding away from the honesty that is necessary for us to improve.”

Corker, who has played more than 200 games for Welsh, added that the squad remained mentally strong.

“We have had a very tough start to the season,” he said.

“There’s only two ways you can go when you are in a corner. You can either come out fighting or roll over.

“I don’t think we know how to do the latter.”

Corker also believes the top flight is tougher now than two seasons ago.

“I think the Premiership has moved on,” he said.

“Maybe a couple of years ago, some errors you could potentially get away with.

“In the first six weeks, our mistakes have really cost us.”
