OXFORD Harlequins felt hard done by after a 43-40 defeat at Newton Abbot.

Quins led 40-24 at one point and were still 40-36 ahead when a controversial penalty try saw the hosts snatch victory in the final minute.

The visitors, who made 11 changes from the previous week, fell behind on five minutes when flanker Luke Mingo drove over, with full back Josh Smith converting.

Smith scored a second try before wing Alasdair Mas-pero’s effort, converted by full back Jack Robinson, got Quins back in the game.

Kyle Browne went over for Abbot’s third, but a fine try, began and finished by fly half Ethan Carlisle and converted by Robinson, saw Quins trail just 17-14 at the break.

Maspero’s second try, converted by Robinson, gave the visitors a brief lead before Smith scored again and added the conversion.

Two tries from debutant flanker Jonathan Miller and another from Carlisle, who converted two, looked to have won the game for Quins.

Mingo and Kev Dennis went over to give Abbot hope, Smith converting one, before adding the extras to the winning penalty try.
