ALEX Davies believes London Welsh’s Championship-winning experience from 2012 will hold them in good stead this time around.
The versatile back, who starts at fly half against Jersey today, played a key role when the Exiles secured promotion to the Premiership two years ago.
With 12 of the 22-man squad that clinched play-off final glory over Cornish Pirates at the Kassam Stadium still at Welsh, Davies says those memories can fire them up.
“It was a great experience to get promoted,” said Davies, who played full back in that side.
“To be part of it, kicking the goals and playing every match, was awesome. To do that again would be an amazing achievement.
“There are a few boys here who have gone through that.
“We know what’s coming up and that helps.”
Welsh won promotion in 2012 having finished fourth in the regular season and losing seven of their 22 matches.
This time, they have secured a top-four spot with three matches to spare, having lost only three times, and could finish first.
Much of that is down to a squad Davies believes is better than two years ago.
“There is a lot of depth and it is good to have that competition,” he said.
“I think it is a stronger squad than when we got promoted before.
“There are more people pushing for the same position.”
Today’s match marks Davies’s 50th in London Welsh colours.
He said: “It was Seb Jewell’s 50th last match and it was mentioned to me afterwards that mine was up as well.
“It is a good achievement to get at such a great club and it will be nice to be at home for my 50th game.”
Davies and his teammates will hope to make a case for play-off selection in Welsh’s remaining three league games.
And with the 27-year-old goal-kicker able to play in at least three positions, that should help his cause.
“Wherever the coach thinks I should play, I am happy to play there,” said Davies.
“I like to dictate the tempo of the game and I can do that from nine or ten and I have plenty of experience at 15.”
