RUGBY UNION: Banbury surge to the top

7:00am Tuesday 4th March 2014

JED Boyle scored a hat-trick of tries as Banbury Bulls went top of with a 39-22 victory at Nuneaton Old Edwardians.

Bulls have played more games than some of their title rivals, but are full of confidence, having won eight matches in a row.

They trailed 22-18 with 12 minutes left, but roared away with three converted tries.

At that stage, Tom Simpson, Tim Whitehouse and Paul Rees had scored tries for the hosts, with Tom Short converting two and adding a penalty.

Carl Daniels and Boyle went over for Banbury, with Alex Fogavini slotting a conversion and two penalties.

Nuneaton had wing Stephen List yellow-carded and Bulls took advantage, with Fogavini converting Boyle’s second try for 25-22.

Boyle completed his hat-trick as he dribbled the ball in from 35 metres to score under the sticks.

Fogavini converted this and added his own try on the final whistle, but sustained cramp in the process, so skipper Ed Phillips added the extras.
