I wouldn't have joined Swindon for £100K a week, says Oxford United star

James Constable looks relieved after scoring against Dagenham James Constable looks relieved after scoring against Dagenham

James Constable would not have considered talking to Swindon Town about a potential move even if they had offered him £100,000 a week.

The Oxford United striker was the subject of a number of bids from the Wiltshire side in January.

But after the U’s accepted an improved offer for Constable, the 27-year-old refused to even discuss a move with United’s derby rivals.

Speaking about the affair for the first time, Oxford’s leading scorer revealed it never once entered his head to talk to Swindon.

And now, all he wants to do is concentrate on scoring more goals for United, having bagged his tenth of the season in the 2-1 win over Dagenham.

“I have always wanted to be at this football club,” he said. “There was never a moment I thought I would go.”

Constable revealed he tried to keep a low profile when the sparks were flying among fans about the potential switch.

“I’m happy it’s all behind me, to be honest – especially the feeling with everything that went on with it,” he added.

“I was informed a bid had been accepted and I just went home and shut myself away.

“I didn’t want to go out or do anything.

“It was difficult, because I didn’t know exactly where my future lay, but I’m delighted that I am still at Oxford United.

“People know what I think of the club and the fans.”

The striker knew that the Wiltshire club would improve his wages if he joined.

But when I asked whether he would have spoken to Swindon if they were prepared to pay him £100,000 a week, Constable replied: “No. It’s never been about money for me.

“Wherever I have been in the past, it has always been about football.

“If it was about money, there would be a lot of other clubs that could have offered more than them (Swindon).

“It’s just been a case of what is the best footballing decision for me, and I feel that is at this football club.”

Constable, who has scored 79 goals for United in his three-and-a-half years at the club – just 28 off becoming their all-time record goalscorer – admitted the situation did have an impact on him.

“It makes it difficult, but from my point of view I never wanted to move,” he said.

“It wasn’t something that interested me.”

And his latest goal was all the more important as it was the first time he had found the net in 2012.

“Ever since the whole thing happened I haven’t scored, so I bet they (the Oxford fans) were thinking that maybe they (the club) should have got rid of me,” he joked.

Hilarious, if it was all about the football, why is he still at oxturd? Don't blame him for staying, he probably knows he would even be behind Medhi in the strikers pecking order at Town. Anyway, all the speculation put him off his game, so mission accomplished.

I've got no problem with Oxford accepting a bid for JC and allowing the player to speak to Swindon.

It's all about supporting your players and not blocking their career. It's called 'respect'. The fact it was Swindon isn't relevant. I'm pretty sure it's one of the reasons why JC feels so much loyalty to Oxford, he knows that the club will support him and look after his best interests, whatever they might be.

OK, I do actually agree with you, I just find it strange when this joke of a sports writer sees it fit to continually knock Town rather than concentrate on their own team. I actually wish them well and would be happy to see the rivalry continue in league 1. Would be alot less comments from Town fans if he didn't continually write about us, obsessed or what!!!

Obviously a quiet news day, what ever next, a Maxwell comeback from beyond the grave ? LOL, I don't think even OU supporters would want that.

Its down to the journo's to dig around and do proper interviews with players and staff, not re-cycle stuff that is enshrined in history.

If Beano is such a good player and person he will want a big move before he retires to bump up his pension. Lets face it with the 55% cap in place he is not being paid a kings ransom is he ? none of them are. One day his agent will say, "here! take this old son because its the best you can hope for now at XX years of age". He is human same as the rest of us, loved, loyal or what ever, he has to butter his bread, and he will go. The name of the club will not be important, his future financial security will be though, and no one can blame him for that. All of this today is petty cheap journo, typical of a no news day by a rookie reporter. Perhaps he needs to get out of his office more, maybe a trip to the training ground, do a back ground story on Kerrouche, a lot more beneficial than this.

Good price based on
1) They think we will win the title.
2) You will not make the play offs
3) We will win the JPT as we are favs at 8/11.

LeGod, You again! Another pseudo Swindon fan needing to stop being a prat.

You state that the JPT doesn't mean anything, bulls**t. Your fans celebrated as if you had made it to the FA Cup final.

As for you thinking that you will win the league. Do you remember how Crawley fans thought their team was as good as promoted this season. Now it's the turn of delusional STFC fans.

Don't you people in Wiltshire understand the season is over in May. You might be clear favourites to win this league, but there are a few other teams that are good enough to spoil your party.

I said in a post before Christmas, after the Cup match at Sheffield, that Chris Wilder was not the manager to take us to the next level and I can see no reason for me to change my mind.

At Burton he played Hall in the first half and we were shocking and what does the manager do in the next match play Hall again and what happens. Hall is half a yard behind the pace and we get overrun with him in the team.

A good leader knows when to get help and we need a forward coach because it is clear Wilder, Lewis and Melville are not up to it.

Having seen some Div 1 football in the last few weeks you can be sure that this team is not good enough.”

Let me see if I have got this right?? You (Swindon) are the next Barca and are THAT good why then you in the same division as Oxford, Barnet, Hereford, Northampton, Crawley, Southend,,,, etc etc etc As we have beat you the last two times we have played you that surely gives us bragging rights AND when we beat you to make it 3 on the trot DOES THAT MEAN WE GET TO KEEP YOU??? Oh you SHOULD thrash Hereford 2mrw but these games do come and kick you up the backside SOMETIMES
The Town did win at Hereford for sure

Now Crawley (who had being saving themselves for their cup match when you beat them) are out, watch them go!!!!
