CHEY Dunkley has joined Wigan Athletic after turning down a contract offer at Oxford United.

The centre back has signed a three-year deal with the Latics, who will play in Sky Bet League One next season following relegation from the Championship.

Dunkley made 96 appearances for the U's after moving from Kidderminster Harriers in November 2014.

He was offered the chance to stay, but rejected new terms on his existing deal, which expires this summer.

Dunkley is the first signing made by Paul Cook, who was only appointed Wigan boss last week after moving from Portsmouth.

The Latics boss told the club's website: "Chey has continued to develop his game year on year since he left Crewe after coming through their academy, learning the hard way in non-league and having his best season to date with Oxford United last year and playing over 50 games.

"He adds more quality to a strong defensive department.”
