Oxford United’s leading scorer, Danny Hylton, celebrated a hat-trick at the club’s annual awards last night.

And the 26-year-old, who picked up player of the season trophies as voted for by supporters and his fellow players, as well as the golden boot, believes he has produced the best football of his career since moving to the U’s.

Hylton made it 16 goals for the campaign in the 2-0 win against Cambridge United, tying his previous best return, for Aldershot in 2011-12.

The forward is aiming to surpass the mark in Saturday’s season finale at Newport County, but even if it does not happen, the No 10 reckons this has been his best year.

“I think so, but it’s for other people to judge,” he said.

“I just want to play and as long as I’m running around then I’m enjoying it.

“The lads made it easy since the day I came in, I’m just happy to be here.

“I’m a bit disappointed not to have already (got to 17), but I’ll keep working hard and trying my best.

“If I can score then brilliant, if not then I’ll try and bring something else to the team.”

Callum O’Dowda was the other multiple winner at the awards.

The 20-year-old winger has enjoyed a breakthrough season, making 42 appearances and scoring four goals, which was acknowledged with the Young Player of the Year award.

O’Dowda was also presented with the Community Contribution prize, for his work volunteering at former school Gosford Hill, where he has helped coach their football team.

Another rising star was also honoured.

James Roberts, 18, won United’s goal of the season for a superb match-winning strike at Plymouth Argyle in Decem- ber.

It won the vote on the night by the 250-strong audience, beating Michael Collins’ long-range effort against Accrington Stanley and another strike from Roberts, at Grimsby Town.

The Club Person of the Year award went jointly to Hugh and Cheryl Howells.

The father and daughter have stepped down from their role organising the ballboys and ballgirls at home games, which they began in 2004.
