DANNY Hylton was honoured to be voted player of the season by Oxford United’s supporters and capped it off with an excellent display in a 2-0 win against Cambridge United.

The top scorer set up Kemar Roofe for the opening goal, before doubling the lead himself from a corner in first-half stoppage time.

It was Hylton’s 16th of the season, ten more than anyone else has scored for the side this season.

There were doubts during an indifferent pre-season over whether the forward was the right man for the U’s, but he is thrilled to have changed perceptions to claim the first player of the season award of his career.

He said: “I’m feeling good at the minute, to win that I’m chuffed to bits because the fans come every week.

“To be picked out individually is an honour, but I couldn’t have done it without my teammates.

“It’s a selfish award, but we have a team of 25 and everyone has played their part.”

He added: “Whenever you sign for a new club people are always going to say ‘he’s not scored enough’ or ‘he’s done this or that’.

“You’ve just got to get your head down, work hard and hopefully win them over.”

The victory at the Kassam Stadium was one of United’s most comfortable of the season and the scoreline could easily have been more emphatic.

Hylton was often the provider, but the No 10 rued not taking an early chance when he rounded goalkeeper Will Norris only to shoot wide of the open goal from an acute angle.

“I’m disappointed I missed the early one when I went round the keeper and got it all wrong,” he said.

“Those things happen and you’ve just got to pick yourself up and keep going. Luckily I managed to score one.

“We’ve got a good, settled team now and I think the last few games have shown what we can do.

“We won 2-0, but it could’ve been ten.”

Hylton, Roofe and Alex MacDonald in particular starred in a second half where United played some of their best attacking football for weeks.

Hylton said: “You can see when we get the ball down and we’re patient in the final third we can cause problems.

“We’ve got players in the dressing room that shouldn’t even be playing in this league, there is real quality in this team.”
