PETER DONALD'S surprise decision to retire will lead to SFL restructuring.

The 56-year-old secretary, who joined the league in 1989 from the SFA, denied he had been forced out by the SPL2 movement and said his decision had been made in October.

His departure follows a scathing report on the SFL, which claimed employees are institutionalised and demoralised and his salary was excessive.

The SFL now plan to replace their management committee with a board of directors and a commercially-minded chief executive.

"I have no doubt the restructuring can resolve the SPL2 problem," said SFL president John Smith. "What First Division clubs want is not a million miles from what we have proposed. I would like to think it can draw everyone back together again."

Donald said: "I told John Smith last October I was thinking of retiring. SPL2 has not forced my hand at all.

"What does happen is that you go over the same well-rehearsed arguments so many times. The same kinds of battles have been going on almost since I joined the SFL.

"Eventually, you say that your arguments may not be helping the debate. In that regard, you could say it affected my thinking, but it was not central to my decision in any way." Iain Brines will referee Dundee United v Celtic on Saturday (12.30, live on Setanta). William Collum takes Rangers v Inverness.
