* BRIAN Bell, Highland's 37-year-old lock forward, is to begin his

fourteenth season of district rugby playing for North and Midlands

against South at Jedburgh on Saturday, writes Bill McMurtrie. It will be

his forty-ninth district game, two short of Chris Snape's North and

Midlands record.

His first district match was against the Anglo-Scots in September,

1982, while he was with Howe of Fife. In his subsequent career he

captained North and Midlands 17 times, including the Dundee match

against the 1988 Australians.

Simon Burns, the current captain, leads a team containing four caps --

Andy Nicol, Rob Wainwright, Dave McIvor, and Martin Scott -- and only

one newcomer, Graham Stirling, the Stewart's Melville wing. Team:
