Oxford United out in front after using just 23 players last season
OXFORD United picked the fewest number of players in Sky Bet League Two last season, writes DAVID PRITCHARD.
The U’s fielded 23 different squad members across the 46-game campaign, two fewer than the next best, Morecambe.
It was less than half the amount selected by Bury, who got through 47.
The Shakers, like the rest of the top four – Northampton, Portsmouth and Torquay – were threatened with relegation and all made big personnel changes after sacking managers.
Continuity paid off for champions Chesterfield, who only used three more players than Oxford, while the other promoted sides, Rochdale (29), Scunthorpe (30) and Fleetwood (32), were all close to the average.
Further up the pyramid, the Championship’s top two – Leicester and Burnley – both used the same quantity as Oxford.
But the lowest number in the Football League was in League One, where Walsall selected just 22.
Players used in League Two
47 Bury, 41 Northampton, 39 Portsmouth, 35 Torquay, 34 Mansfield, 33 York, 32 Fleetwood, Newport, 31 Dagenham, Cheltenham, 30 Southend, Scunthorpe, Wimbledon, Hartlepool, Burton, Bristol Rov, 29 Plymouth, Accrington, Rochdale, 27 Exeter, 26 Chesterfield, 25 Morecambe, 23 Oxford Utd.
- Meanwhile, Asa Hall will come up against Oxford United next season after signing a two-year contract at Cheltenham Town.
The 27-year-old midfielder has had two spells with the U’s, most recently on loan in the first half of last season.
He finished the campaign back at parent club Shrewsbury, but was released following their relegation from League One.
