OXFORD United were on the receiving end of quality finishing and some unfortunate ricochets as Charlton Athletic breezed through in the Capital One Cup first round tonight.

Simon Church put the hosts in front in the 18th minute when a blocked shot rebounded invitingly.

United went on to finish the first half strongly through Ryan Williams, but the tie was over before the hour mark at The Valley.

Danny Green's free-kick stretched the lead, before Church made the most of another piece of good fortune to put the game to bed as their Championship class told.

Joe Pigott rounded off the night with a stoppage time penalty after Jake Wright had tripped Jordan Cousins.

Teenagers Callum O'Dowda and Williams made their debuts as part of four changes to the United XI from the weekend's win at Portsmouth.

James Constable and Asa Hall also started as Deane Smalley, Alfie Potter and Sean Rigg dropped to the bench, while a rib injury ruled Dave Kitson out.

Charlton boss Chris Powell made ten changes from the side which lost at Bournemouth on Saturday and it took time for the hosts to settle.

They had been marginally the better side in a quiet opening, but scarcely deserved to go ahead on 18 minutes.

Although United had plenty of bodies on the edge of their box, a blocked shot from Pigott fell kindly to Church, who gratefully pounced on the chance and beat Ryan Clarke from 12 yards.

United needed some inspiration from somewhere to assert themselves on the game - and it came from Williams.

The winger, on loan from Fulham, caused problems with his direct running and he had the two best chances himself before the break.

The first came from a 60-yard barnstorming run from Johnny Mullins. He slipped in the Australian, who hesitated long enough for Ben Hamer to make a comfortable block.

Williams should have done better with the next opening, but he curled wide from 15 yards after Tom Newey's cross had only been partially cleared.

It gave the visitors hope of finding a way back into the game after the break.

That optimism lasted less than four minutes, when Charlton doubled their lead from a free-kick.

Green struck it well, skidding through a crowded penalty area and past an unsighted Clarke.

Church missed a glorious chance to make it 3-0 from Pigott's cross, but he quickly made amends.

Again there was an element of fortune as Cedric Evina's speculative shot, which was going well wide, was controlled by the striker and red inverted past Clarke.

United's defence immediately turned and looked for an offside flag, which never came.

Saturday's goal scorers, Alfie Potter and Deane Smalley, were brought off the bench and quickly made an impact.

On the break Potter used the striker as a decoy and dribbled into the box, where Hamer made a smart block.

Charlton had the final word in stoppage time, when Pigott converted from the penalty spot.
