JAKE Wright launched a stinging attack on some of his Oxford United teammates in the wake of their 3-2 defeat to bottom club Aldershot Town.

The skipper accused some who featured on Easter Monday of playing for themselves and not the team as the side lost for the third time in four npower League Two games.

United looked disjointed, particularly in the first half, and fell 2-0 behind shortly after the break.

They fought back to level late on thanks to goals from Scott Davies and Jon-Paul Pittman, which came either side of Michael Raynes getting sent off for two bookable offences.

But Jeff Goulding gave the basement boys only their sixth home win of the season by flicking in a free-kick three minutes from time.

It deepened United’s poor run, which has killed off hopes of reaching the play-offs and Wright was bitterly disappointed with the performances of individuals on his side.

He said: “It’s not the manner of the defeat, it’s how we’ve played that really hurts me.

“We were poor. I don’t think enough players turned up and wanted to win – that’s the first thing you should do as a footballer, no matter what level you’re at.

“We let the gaffer, the staff, the fans and each other down.

“Some players seem to be playing for themselves and not for the team.

“If you play like that, you’re never going to win anything.

“I’m gutted with how it’s gone and some players need to have a look at themselves and do better.”

U’s boss Chris Wilder had doubts over whether Aldershot’s opening goal had crossed the line.

But, just as in Friday’s 1-1 draw with Morecambe where another late goal was conceded, he was left exasperated by his own players.

He had no complaints over the home side’s other two goals, which came from United errors.

“When we make decisions like that just after half-time, and then just after we’ve got ourselves back into it, it beggars belief that we think we can go and win football matches,” he said.

“It’s been a disappointing weekend.”

There was more bad news, with Sean Rigg limping off in the opening ten minutes.

The ankle injury will be assessed this week, but the early fears are it could rule the winger out for the final four games of the season.
