Oxford United's FA Cup replay frozen off

OXFORD United have been forced to postpone tonight's FA Cup replay after a pitch inspection this lunchtime.

The pitch was covered last night, but with temperatures forcecast to fall below freezing before the scheduled kick-off it was unlikely the second round replay with Accrington Stanley could have been completed.

The tie has been rearranged for Tuesday, December 18.

The covers worked perfectly, and at 10am this morning the pitch was soft and very playable. What the ref said was that the pitch would freeze just before and during the match and it would become unplayable sometime during the second half, so, sensibly he called it off and saved the away fans a 300+ mile round trip in this weather. Why they didn't install undersoil heating when the pitch was laid, is another thing altogether.

OUFC were just an inconvenience, a mere stepping stone on the road to increasing his Millions.
He's happy to be taking the candy out of the baby's mouth, so to speak.
And no doubt has a quiet chuckle to himself on his Yacht moored off Monaco, now and then- re-counting how ingeniously he duped Council Officials and OUFC Board members.
There was never any 'Welcome' from kassam.

Funny, don't think Stagecoach has used that excuse yet for its delayed or missing #16 buses to Littlemore, or its #12 bus to Greater Leys - many of which (according to a bloke I met on the posh Bicester bus with leather seats last week) are "so flippin ancient, that they qualify for free bus tax discs and winter fuel payments, and so many #16s go missing that people are calling Littlemore, Cowley Centre and Greater Leys the Bermuda Triangle!"

Surely a pitch will not freeze when it's got twenty-plus blokes running around on it? Any ice crystals which do form will only be at the surface, not in the underlying soil, and will be snapped as soon as footer player's boot lands on them.

I remember seeing clips from matches in the 70s on pitches covered in snow, cleared along the line markings, played with an orange ball.

THey're not ballet dancers they're footer players! THey should be made to get out there and do what they're paid for.

You are correct in saying that you have seen games played in the 70's that the pitch has been covered in snow and they have played with an orange ball. This has been repeated in previous years at the Kassam but not with the pitch frozen under foot, if there isn't a frost then the snow falls it acts as an insulating layer.
