Tom Craddock admitted Oxford United might have won by a bigger margin at Edgar Street on Saturday.

James Constable and Craddock got the goals in a comfortable 2-0 win, but other good opportunities were missed as the U’s totally dominated the match.

Nevertheless, United’s new signing was delighted to get off the mark with his first goal for the club.

“I was really pleased to get that first one,” he said.

“If we’d taken our chances I think we could have had a few more.

“Hopefully we’re saving them up for the next game!

He added: “Maybe I should have done better when Beano pulled it back for me, but when you’ve got that two-goal cushion, you can maybe try one or two things.

“But 2-0’s not a bad result.”

And he wasn’t concerned that such a classy finish came in an away game with 1,000 Oxford fans present, as opp-osed to the 6,500 that come along to home matches.

“I don’t care where they come,” he said.

“Hopefully we can carry this form on to next week and pick up another three points against Stockport.”

This was Oxford’s first away win in the Football League since January 2, 2006, when they won 1-0 at Chester, but then failed to win again that season and were relegated.

And Constable said United players had remarked how surprising it was that, despite playing well, they had not won away for some time recently, their last away victory coming at Altrincham at the start of April.

“We looked in the programme and saw we hadn’t won away for some time, six away from home, which I can’t understand,” he said.

“It seems a lot so it was nice to get that off our back and we played really well today and deserved the three points.

“My goal was a bit scrappy, to say the least, it was just nice to see it go in.

“I sort of swung at it, it rolled up the shin, and it was nice to poke it in, in the end.

“It was a great ball from Greeny (Matt Green) and I was lucky to get that second bite of the cherry.”

Manager Chris Wilder felt his team were solid at just the right times.

“We knew Hereford would start really quick after getting beat last week,” he said.

“We gave them a couple of little opportunities in the first 15-20 minutes that I wasn’t too happy about.

“But once we started getting settled into the game and winning second balls and passing, I was delighted, and then we went in front at half-time.

“Then we needed to make sure we were nice and strong for the first 10-15 minutes of the second half and I thought we saw that period out well.

“Towards the end, we kept the ball very well, and made right decisions.”

The U’s boss will not get carried away with his team being in the play-off positions, just as he didn’t when they were in 18th after three games.

But he said chairman Kelvin Thomas might have preferred them to be in eighth, rather than seventh, at this stage of the season.

“It doesn’t matter to me being seventh, but it will matter for the chairman because he might have to pay a bonus!” Wilder said.
