Summer signing Gary Twigg gets another chance to prove he should be in Oxford United's starting line-up for the new season when he starts tonight's pre-season friendly against Wycombe Wanderers.

Scottish striker Twigg is in from the off partly because Yemi Odubade continues to be troubled by his lower abdominal strain.

And United are just being cautious about it.

Twigg, who got United's winner at Eastleigh ten days ago, said: "I'd love to get another goal, and at home.

"But I don't read too much into pre-season. The season proper is when it matters."

Manager Jim Smith said United's line-up almost picks itself after what has been a positive pre-season so far.

"Yemi's injured so he won't play, but it's only precautionary," he said. "It won't be too far away from the team that starts the season.

"But then again, we don't have that many options.

"Overall pre-season's gone well. You always get some injuries and little niggles.

"With Chris Willmott I'm a little bit disappointed, in that I thought he might have been a little bit more advanced. But it's not to be and it's the same with Gilly (Phil Gilchrist).

"We thought that we might be looking at a fortnight into the season, if not before, for both of them, but that's stretching it a bit.

"It's disappointing, but that's probably the only disappointing factor of pre-season because it's all gone pretty well."

Two big plusses have been the displays of new boys Alex Jeannin and Phil Trainer, and both left-sided players are expected to start against Wycombe, whose last visit to the Kassam Stadium two years ago ended in an exciting 2-2 draw, with Danny Morgan getting Oxford's late equaliser.

Last season, the teams met in the FA Cup at Adams Park, with the League Two side winning 2-1.

The Chairboys proved a very good cup side last term, beating Charlton on the way to reaching the semi-finals of the Carling Cup, where they lost to Chelsea.

Former United centre forward Tommy Mooney has moved on, joining Walsall after rejecting a new contract.

But Paul Lambert's squad will probably include ex-U's defender Sam Stockley and former United targets Scott McGleish and Jermaine Easter, as well as the classy Stefan Oakes.
