Adam Chapman rejects Oxford United deal - but will stay with club

Adam Chapman has turned down two improved offers from Oxford United – but will stay with the club.

The out-of-contract midfielder is after a better financial deal, from the U’s, but chairman Kelvin Thomas says the club feel they have offered a fair deal.

"We have made two offers to Adam, both improving his existing agreement, however Adam feels he deserves a better financial package," Thomas said.

"We have agreed to disagree on the issue as we feel strongly that the offer is at a similar level to other players in the club with Adam's experience.

"Adam has clearly stated in discussions that he remains fully committed to the club and wants the opportunity to earn the level of contract he feels he deserves.

"Once his existing agreement expires at the end of this month we will discuss with Adam about entering into an agreement whereby he continues playing on his existing financial package as per Football League regulations."

He only wants to stay so we keep paying him until any Tom, Dick or Harry comes in for him. What he is saying in effect is you just pay my wages till August and if someone comes in for me just before the season starts ...I'm off and sod the club. Reckon it's best if he clears off now as he will certainly lose the respect of the United fans.

it's not easy to upset you lot you turned on Constable even though the club accepted an offer for him so your chairman and manager were happy for him to go but you lot turned on him so no doubt you will turn on Chapman.

Relegation battle ahead and back to the Conference :)

dont know why some people insist that the club want to sell jc ,the simple fact of football life is that if you get an offer that is acceptable ann it suits the player then it will happen. to have turned down two offers indicates they do not have to sell ,and i hope he stays with us as i think that he and clarke are our biggest assets.ive got the strangest feeling ,totally illogical i know and people will scoff, that smalley will come good this season and england will do well in euro 2112

Yes it is a great post but those on the Yellow Forums are being shouted down all the time and being accused of being negative from people who don't know what's going on and from people within the club who are trying to keep some sort of control.

Finances limited seems a generous description.

On the topic, I really don't know what to think. Is the offer paltry? Is he being ungrateful and kicking the club in the teeth? Is it wise to announce this as the player will now be at risk of losing the fans?

Constable is one thing, Chapman is completely different. He did 30 months in prison whilst we supported him. He owes the club and should realise it. No discussion on his playing ability just his morales!

Why do people always moan and groan? If you love the club you will be behind them. People will always have there own thoughts on the manager and who he brings in. Unless they are willing to take over as manager or take over as owner if they have the money to do it. If I had millions I would take over the club but I don't so until someone with money and proper knowledge of how to run a football club we will have to show our surport for what we have. But chappers should sign a new deal as he does owe us alot! This is all be forgotten come the new season. Also rigg is better then most of the players we have at the moment!

Roarkat says...

People are missing the point about Chapman stalling over signing his new contract. KT has said that Chapman feels he's deserves a better financial package, which he is entitled to do. But instead of leaving the club for not getting the deal he wants, (which he can probably get elsewhere) Chapman actually wants to stay and prove to CW and KT that he is worth the deal he's after. This should work in OUFC's favour as to get that improved deal, he'll have to play better than ever before, which can only be of benefit to Oxford.

Maybe we should be applauding Champan's determination to succeed rather than deriding someone who's trying to show their loyalty by proving their worth?

Manor Born says...
10:48am Fri 8 Jun 12

Just because the club stood by him when he was in prison, doesn't mean the club should take the mickey and offer below-par wages. Chapman still has the right to earn a decent, living wage and one that matches both his worth and his talent.

The club stood by him because they think he's an asset and worth a bit of money that another team may wish to spend. They could see that Chapman had the potential to be a very good footballer and his abilities would be of benefit to the team.

They won't withdraw the offer, as they would lose out on any compensation that they may get - a sizeable chunk of which would have to go to Sheffield United.

If the club have offered a fair & decent wage, then Chappers is playing a very dangerous game.

As for sacking the board, what a ridiculous statement. The club is being well-run within what is reportedly one of the higher budgets in the division. We're not saddled with a massive debt and what debt there is is owed to the Lenegans who have maintained their stance that they are happy with the situation, have no desire to call in that debt and that it is easily manageable.

What benefit does Lenegan gain from bringing rugby to Oxford? He doesn't own London Welsh and he doesn't own the stadium. The only person who does gain from that is Kassam. OUFC's rent will stay the same, there is no benefit for the club at all - all it does is make the stadium more lucrative to Kassam and therefore more difficult to buy off him.

Of course you should love your club, but not get shafted by the the powers above.

Chapman should sign up as the club have been loyal to him and he should repay this loyalty.

I believe that John Constable should go as he's stuck in a big rut. He needs a different challenge now and would make a better player under the guidance of another mentor.

I'm guessing Yellowhoods and Legod don't have jobs and they are frustrated and bitter, or they are perhaps schoolboys. I guess they are the latter because their postings are so immature. To describe the nonsense you idiots post as childish is an insult to children.

Anyhow, commenting on the Chapman story. I reckon Chapman's agent is hell bent on getting him to sign for another club. Agents only care about commisions. Personally I believe Chapman wants to stay at Oxford. The fans and management have been fantastic to him, both before and after his time in prison.

I would like Lenegan to make a statement to the fans to explain his commitment to the club, and to explain what he has planned for the club's future. We are always being told that the club has ambition. It would be nice to know how much financing is on offer to realise these ambitions.

I feel that Wilder and Thomas have their hands tied behind their backs, and Lenegan is the one who has tied them up. I don't think that Lenegan is doing enough for the club. We haven't purchased the ground, which leaves us with a three-sided joke of an arena.

It appears that because rugby wasn't an ongoing project at Oxford (Lenegan is a rugby fanatic), the owner is only mildly interested in what happens at the club. If that is the case, I think United would do well to find a more commited owner.

Oxford should be in a position to offer their players the same wages that teams with far fewer fans are able to offer. That would make us a club that could keep it's best players, and also it would enable us to attract players. Now that's what I call ambition.

If you're being offered more than 20k a year Chappers, I think you should sign on the dotted line. You are a decent player, and we need you to stay badly - but footballers' wages are totally out of proportion with that of the fans.... 15 quid or more to support the yellows is a big big sacrifice for the majority who do so.... I am sure you have been offered a figure that equates to what the club can reasonably afford, based on revenue.... Get your head down, and keep showing the commitment on the field that we have been lucky to get from you. You are highly valued by both the club and the fans, but if you want more than 20k a year then I would urge you to reconsider, or else move on to a club that is either more financially irresponsable, or gets 20,000 a week to be able to afford whatever wage you are pining for...
