Johnson: It's so frustrating

By Mark Edwards »

Oli Johnson says it is hard to describe the frustration a professional footballer feels when their game is called off.

Oxford United’s trip to Accrington Stanley today fell to the weather yesterday, and has been rearranged for Tuesday, March 27.

But Johnson, who joined the U’s in January, said that it is increasingly annoying on the back of a postponed home match with Barnet a week earlier.

“It’s absolutely freezing at the moment, but it’s something you have to cope with,” he said.

“You get it every season, and these are the few weeks when you have to wrap up and look after yourself.

“In the back of your mind is whether the game is going to be on or off which isn’t ideal.

“You want to work towards a game at the end of the week.”

The postponements mean most clubs now have a run of matches which sees them play every weekend and most midweeks.

And that, Johnson says, is not ideal.

“Personally, I find that too many Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday games does make it hard.

“You tend to pick up knocks and it takes its toll on your body.

“Training that can be tailored to your needs, whereas with matches there’s no let-up.

“You can have all the natural fitness in the world, but match fitness is different and you can only get that with games.”
