United boss Chris Wilder is looking to sign two midfielders
Oxford United are looking to seal two new signings before pre-season training begins next week.
The U’s have made formal approaches to a pair of midfielders with Football League experience and are expecting answers from the duo, who are free agents, in the next few days.
It has been a quiet summer at the Kassam Stadium, with Sean Rigg the only player to join so far in the close season.
But United boss Chris Wilder is optimistic the squad will have more new faces by the time they get together for the start of pre-season on July 6.
He said: “We have a couple of offers in there and we’re just finding out if we can get them accepted.
“It’s a waiting game, hopefully in the next week or so we would like to get both players in for pre-season training.
“It’s come to the stage where they have to make decisions.”
Strengthening the middle of the park is now Wilder’s main priority, with little room for manoeuvre in other departments.
Defensively the only scope for change is likely to be in providing Damian Batt with competition at right back, and with Bristol Rovers’ move for James Constable appearing to go quiet, United have seven attackers.
The U’s manager said: “If you look at it Paul McLaren’s gone, which frees that area up, and Asa (Hall)’s left as well.
“At the moment we’ve got Peter Leven, Adam Chapman, Andy Whing and Simon Heslop in there but we ran with five or six midfielders in the squad last season.”
And with pre-season training looming, the transfer market is expected to intensify.
Wilder said: “Speaking to a lot of people it feels like it’s just starting to speed up now.
“Players are looking to finalise their options before pre-season starts – every club’s back at about the same time and we’d like a couple of new players to be in with us.”

So Kassam has raped the club of another 300k.
No wonder we're struggling financially again....

As for all the idiots who keep stating we are spending money like its going out of fashion it takes along time to sink into you lot. As last season the majority of players we have signed are free transfers and we have a wage restriction on what we pay which is why we didnt sign Holmes. We have put a budget in place which we can affford, bigger sponsors, more season ticket sales, revenue for some of the players being sold.
Idiots on your forum are very jealous of our success last season so all i can say is why dont you worry about your own team where players are leaving like its going out of fashion as they see no desire to move forward from your club.
Enjoy your struggle in L2 next season.

The wheels have fallen off at Oxford - a season of doom and gloom and struggle. With you first two months of the season and the games you have be prepared for alot of negativitiy from you Yellow fans. though i would never post on stfc website , recently i looked at the one on the swindon advertiser and found that the fount of all football knowledge namely le god is held in very slightly higher regard there than on the ox site with their own fans wanting to meet him face to face and sort each other out, not very harmonious at all and they dont all have his blind obsession with all things decanio, and are unimpressed with le gods verbal diarroea about stfc.
As a point, the item you mention about LG being out of favour was a misunderstanding between the two posters and if you when you are back on the Adver site again follow the thread and you'll see for yourself.
Leave a post on there if you like - we don't mind ....
My god you need something to talk about on here if its only having a pop at us, as there is not much going on with OU at the moment, very stagnant.

It wouldn't surprise me if OUFC are in for Smith and Cox, but I hope that neither sign for them...
.
And as for Connell......They simply couldn't afford him :)....
.
But hey...... That's life when your struggling at the bottom :)
