FOOTBALL: Manager spells it out to Oxford United trio

The three players considering contracts from Oxford United would be “daft” to turn them down, according to manager Chris Wilder.

Of the eight U’s players whose deals ended this summer, only Adam Chapman, Asa Hall and Wayne Brown were offered the chance to stay when the decisions were made this week.

Paul McLaren, Mark Wilson, Oli Johnson, Anthony Tonkin and Aaron Woodley were all released.

The successful trio were due to receive the formal details yesterday after being told of the club’s plans in meetings on Tuesday.

United are keen to complete the process as swiftly as possible, giving them the maximum amount of time to search for transfer targets during the close season.

Wilder is optimistic all three will put pen to paper, despite the possibility of interest from other clubs.

He said: “The offers going out are sensible, it’s nothing ridiculous in terms of where we’re at, there’s not a massive injection of money.

“I’m not going to put a gun to their heads, but I won’t hang on forever and they know that.

“Fingers crossed, we can get it tied up with their agents pretty quickly.

“I can’t do anything about other clubs, but I think they would be daft to leave us because we think the progression of the club is there for all to see.

“I spoke to them on Tuesday and I’d be very surprised if they didn’t stay.”

If Brown agrees a new deal, his role will include coaching.

The 35-year-old will continue to deputise for Ryan Clarke, but would work alongside goalkeeping coach Alan Hodgkinson, who turns 76 this summer.

Despite his age he's still extremely good at what he does, his experience and knowledge is second to none. We would be stupid to let him go, remember he is a coach not a player!!!

76, blimey my mum is 78 and she is wayyyyy old, thanks Hodgy but time to retire and watch from the stands.

Attacking coach also required, someone who can persuade the manager to play 4 midfielders to supply them.

I'd still like to go drinking with Hodgy and Jim Smith. Bet they could tell a few stories!
Once, when I was very young interviewed Denis Smith for a newspaper article - he knew a story or two and it was only years later I realised he couldn't possibly have played against Pele and Maradona!

The 3 are worth keeping. Chapman and Hall need some proper coaching in order to complete more passes and keep their fitness levels up.

Thanks Hodgy but time to use your knowledge in the backroom area and leave Browny or a new goalkeeping coach to do the physical stuff. He can't test the keepers when kicking the ball at them as he struggles to kick a ball! Bring in some new coaching staff and some top quality players!

If as northampton yellow says KT is getting help from Wigan Warriors does that mean he does not trust CW to be able to fix the problem.

if your players had the the preseason Swindon players had perhaps this wouldnt be discussed. They had three months of solid training 7 days a week and twice a day for the 3 month period and we were by far the fittest team in the league.
I cant believe so called professional managers of a football club need to bring outside people in to get your players fit from rugby club to me that goes to prove your coaches and manager dont have the know how to get them fitter.

well if it fixes the problem "why not they mite learn a thing or 2"but it does not say much 4 our coaches thats why things at our club much needed you could see the players were knackard and didnt have a clue towards the end of season.

LeGod. Are you still trawling this site. Jesus Christ you must be bored/boring.

Do you have a newspaper or website for Swindon? I wouldn't know as I never have or never will be interested.

You're almost like that fat bird we blew out at school. Always slightly obsessed with the pretty boy she can't have.

Your opinion is not valued. Your comments are not welcome. Go away and celebrate winning the league. Stop being a smart arse on here.

please can all Oxford fans on here ignore all these dopes posts. Don't bite, don't respond and maybe they'll foxtrot Oscar. Pathetic.

Le God funny how this one complains about others inputting comments on here from other clubs, but fails to add anything of note with his posts regarding his own club.

Looking forward to United winning many more games next season than will Swindon. Pity that we are playing weaker teams than them and the clubs which they are playing. United must never be happy with ending lower than half way in the third tier . We only rarely did so from 1967 until 2008. Waste of time getting involved in responding to the less intelligent ones among Swindon's 8000 fans

oldun don't lower yourself to the standards of some of your fellow posters on here.

Enjoy L2 - will leave you all now to the fun and games of the 'hoof ball' league.
Still it's gotta to be better than the 'Pub League' you were in not long ago though.

Have a good season.

The 'fitness' you drivel about didn't help them much when the Yellows came to the County Ground.
