Oxford United decide against fourth stand for local derby

United chairman Kelvin Thomas United chairman Kelvin Thomas

Oxford United will not have a fourth stand in place for the visit of Swindon Town in March – because it is not commercially viable.

The U’s sold out of their ticket allocation for the derby fixture in mid-November.

But after discussions with various parties about the possibility of erecting a temporary stand at the west end of the ground, it has been decided – mainly from a financial point of view – that it will not happen.

Chairman Kelvin Thomas said last night: “Everyone in the club would have loved to put a fourth stand up for this fixture.

“It’s something that hasn’t happened before and we all like to create history in some way.

“However, after spending a lot of time on the research and a tremendous amount of time discussing the positives and negatives, we think it is the right decision at this point.

“It could be a safety risk and a financial risk, on top of what is already a very high-profile fixture.

“We are very excited about the fixture anyway, we will have a great crowd with over 10,000 Oxford fans and we look forward to a cracking atmosphere and game.”

If the stand had got the go-ahead, there would have been a record crowd at the Kassam Stadium of around 14,000.

The capacity as it stands is 12,500, but will be reduced because of the extent of segregation now needed in the North Stand.

United held discussions with suppliers, corporate partners, City Council and Thames Valley Police, but ultimately it came down to money.

A statement from the club said: “Due to Football League regulations, the ticket price for a potential fourth stand could not be more than the Oxford Mail Stand.

“In this stand, the blended average price after VAT is £11.94 per seat.

“However the combined cost of the fourth stand has worked out at an estimated £17.74, excluding VAT per seat.

“Therefore the stand itself would be a loss leader.”

It added: “With an additional stand, the overall attendance would be over 14,000, which would also create serious traffic flow and parking issues before and after the match.

“Given that this match will not be a low-key fixture anyway, it is seen as a risk to test traffic flow and any new parking systems in such a high profile fixture.

“If a stand was put in place, 1,974 seats would become available for home fans, which would all need to be sold to close the gap for the costs of the new stand.

“After two months of home tickets selling out and numerous reminders, the waiting list stands at only 165, therefore it is a reasonable assumption that the demand for additional seating will not reach the supply.

“Taking all the factors into consideration it was decided that the financial risk, coupled with the additional potential safety risks, meant that it does not justify the installation of additional seating.”

Swindon have been allocated 1,252 North Stand seats, along with seven tickets for wheelchair users and seven for PAs.

Tickets are already sold out for home fans.

As Dave said, still thinking along the lines of a Blue Square club, simply no imagination.

Kelvin Thomas has got it wrong. You say that there isn't enough interest for a 4th stand. But who would want to be on a list for something that might not even get built.

If you had put up a temporary stand first, then it would'nt have been a problem to sell out an extra 2,000 seats. You obviously don't appreciate the magnitude of this game for U's fans. This is a big disappointment for those fans without tickets.

On the financial side, you could have put the extra cost on tickets to Swindon fans. Most clubs do this to our fans when we travel to their grounds in big numbers.

This is very small minded of OUFC. We (the loyal fans) have poured thousands into the club this (and every) season.

Everybody has looked forward to an eventual 4th stand for this game. This would have been by far the biggest crowd of the season for any club in League 2.

The club then decides that it's fans aren't a viable proposition.
Does'nt the club understand that a potential loss of £12k, balanced against the possibility of extra revenue from returning fans in the final part of the season, would have been a plus for the club.

The traffic flow is a non-starter in the argument against a 4th stand being put in place. How then would this problem be resolved if we were to build a 4th stand in the future?

This decision by Oxford United FC, I feel has let their fans down.

It amazes me how Swindon fans have the nerve to come on here and make fun of our ground. The County Ground does'nt actually resemble a state of the art arena. The main end is smaller than many stands in the Conference. One end is uncovered and when you approach the place from the outside, it looks really run down.

The Oxford ground when it is completed will be one of the best grounds in the lower divisions. We have room for improvement and developement. What possibilities are there for the County Ground?

Massive inferiority complex, probably from birth. Clear sign of a restricted gene pool I understand.

I'm hopeful that we are minding the pennies at the moment to put us in a position to buy Kassam out. You can call KT whatever you like but he is a shrewd financial operator and I don't doubt for a second that buying the ground is higher on his list of priorities than getting promotion.

I think Swindon fans need a reality check.

My predictions for the rest of the STFC season.
1. Knocked out of FA Cup bu Leicester.
2. Johnstone's Paint Trophy...Who cares.
3. Knocked out in the play-offs.
4. Paulo Di Canio leaves Swindon before the start of next season.
5. Swindon fans are totally humbled and shocked by the lack of success.

Kelvin, you should have put it to the fans first. You are claiming a 12k loss. But how much money have the club made on the advanced ticket sales since November? Surely the interest on that alone would cancel out any revenue loss from a 4th stand.

This is a game that all Oxford fans want to attend. Sure, there would be safety issues. But how much is it of a safety risk to have rival fans in the same stand?

The 4th stand could have been put up for Swindon fans. This would have increased their ticket allocation. Oxford fans ticket allocation would also have been increased in the North stand.

Naturally from a safety point of view, it would be far better to have the Swindon fans isolated behind one goal. After the match, they could remain in that area to help ease traffic congestion. This would also reduce putting Swindon fans at risk from being attacked by Oxford fans.

Another point is this, How much revenue will be lost by not selling rows of seats in the segregated part of the North Stand? Surely this would be more than 12k.

I think both Oxford and swindon fans deserve some honest answers.

STFC are 4th, OUFC are 7th - how does that justify coming onto the Oxford Mail website to crow about how amazing STFC are and how terrible OUFC are?

The season has a way to go yet, who knows how it will turn out for either team. I would shy away from comparing Kass and County Ground, too, neither are exactly The Emirates.

I think this decision reflects that both the manager and chairman have little experience in this sort of negotiation with the relevant authorities, being easily swayed my their opinions instead of standing firm in the face of these people and saying exactly why the planning permission was granted for that location in the first place. To cite traffic management is shear cobblers, and the cost consideration does not equate either.
For a club which allegedly has ambition to make the play offs and several larger than normal crowds expected in the coming weeks the stand is easily justifiable. What isn't known is how much pure desire the chairman and board have in staying with the club or hoping to sell it as rumoured during the summer. They are definitely not thinking of the long term nor does their investment in playing staff endorse that, another component in their thinking. Their wallets are obviously shut, quite firmly, reflecting their ambition, and a large crowd and its management frightens them, instead they could have cashed in, but their lack of experience outside of the Blue Square/Conference is now standing in the way. No doubt the investment needed to sustain this club in League One is not available, because they can't even manage a League Two capacity gate, shame on them.
For ever in our shadow. Large capacity crowd now expected at County Ground to watch the game on a big screen, all profits to STFC, Game On.

1. You cant afford it yourselves and the figures that Kelvin gave are rubbish and another red herring.

2. You dont want many Swindon fans there so its more intimidating for our players.

All the nonsense of the traffic problems is another red herring if you cant cope with a crowd of the size we are talking about if you ever got promoted that means you can never have crowds over 10,000 which means you are happy to stay in L2 and lack ambition.

Think about it Oxford fans there are a vast number of clubs on the country with bigger stadiums and bigger crowds and they cope and you are a City for gods sake.
