JOE Rothwell is relishing his opportunity in Oxford United’s starting line-up and the chance to link-up with Marvin Johnson down the left flank.

The form of John Lundstram and Ryan Ledson has limited the 22-year-old’s chances in the centre of midfield this season.

But Rothwell made his fourth start in a row for United in Wednesday’s defeat at home to Fleetwood Town.

Albeit slightly out of position, he is enjoying his role on the left-side of midfield and has developed a good partnership with Johnson, who needs no encouragement to attack from full back.

The former Manchester United youngster is now hoping to kick on in the last five games of the season.

He said: “I don’t mind where I’m playing.

“Obviously I would rather be in the centre, but when I play out wide I tend to drift more inside anyway.

“I think myself and Marv have got quite a good relationship and understanding going on.

“Because I do come inside, it gives Marv a lot of freedom to go on the outside as more of an attacking wing back, so it’s like having two left wingers.

“I think in the last few weeks it has worked quite well and hopefully it will continue.”
