OXFORD United are in the running to sign two targets before the squad flies to Spain for a training camp on Sunday.

Head coach Michael Appleton is optimistic about completing moves in the next few days for a striker and a midfielder as he seeks to strengthen the squad in the wake of Kemar Roofe's departure for Leeds United.

Neither is expected to play in the first friendly of pre-season, at Solihull Moors tomorrow, but Appleton felt there could well be a new face at check-in on Sunday.

He said: "I think we have a 50/50 chance with one player (to sign by Sunday) and a 70/30 chance with another.

"I’d be more confident of something getting done next week while we’re away, but time is running out to actually getting them on the plane."

United are also still in the market for Chris Maguire, who was offered a contract in May after starting 24 games last season.

An improved offer has been made to the Scot, but it is only likely to be on the table until the end of the weekend.

Appleton said: "We have made an offer yesterday which we feel is very competitive and we won’t hang around with that one because there are other irons in the fire.

"If we don’t get an answer this weekend I think we’ll probably end up moving on."

There is also news on goalkeepers Sam Slocombe, who has been told he is surplus to requirements.

Slocombe is training with Bradford City and could play in their match at Guiseley tomorrow.
