THE long wait for Oxford United’s first signing of the summer should come to an end today with a transfer target due for a medical at the club.

A deal has been agreed for a player, released by a Sky Bet Championship club this summer.

Providing there are no issues with the physical tests, the U’s are optimistic everything can be sealed by the end of the day.

Michael Appleton acknowledged it would be welcome news for the club’s supporters, almost seven weeks into the close season.

United’s head coach said: “I suppose for the fans it will (be good).

“We’ve got a good nucleus of a competitive squad but going forward it would be nice to see three or four new faces come in.

“Everything has been agreed (apart from the medical).”

Further reinforcements look to be on the horizon.

United have been patient while several targets consider contract offers, but decisions are now needed before the weekend.

Appleton said: “I’d imagine we would have answers over the next 48 hours because we have put deadlines on them.

“In the past we have been trying to give players as much time as they need, but it’s getting to the point where we need answers.

“If they don’t happen we have other players who are waiting for us.”
