MICHAEL Appleton admits he has no idea whether top scorer Kemar Roofe will be available for Oxford United’s promotion decider against Wycombe Wanderers this weekend.

The 26-goal forward has been struggling since picking up an ankle injury against Luton Town last month.

But the problem for the U’s is they seem to be having problems getting to the bottom of the issue, which saw him sit out Saturday’s 2-0 win at Carlisle United.

While Appleton is desperate for Roofe to be available for the high-pressure clash at the Kassam Stadium, where a win would secure promotion, the head coach is in the dark and expects to have to make a late decision.

He said: “Kemar trained on Thursday and was completely fine, no problems whatsoever.

“Then on Friday he pulled out within five minutes – the honest answer is I haven’t got a clue.

“It’s obviously very sore and there’s bone bruising there.

“We’ll have a look at him through the week and we won’t rush him back on to the training field.”

Surprisingly given Roofe’s stellar season, United’s win ratio is actually higher when he has not been involved.

They have claimed victories in 52 per cent of games where the 23-year-old has featured, compared to 60 per cent without him.

Appleton said: “I don’t think we’ve lost often when he’s been out of the side, but we’ve won a lot with him in it as well.

“He’s a top player and those types want to play in big games.

“If we can get him fit then he’s a big player for this club and he scores goals at big times.

“We’ll just wait and see.”

Regardless of who plays, United will go into the Wycombe game knowing victory sends them up, while dropping points would probably mean they drop into the Sky Bet League Two play-offs.

Had Accrington lost to Wycombe last weekend a point would have been enough for the U’s on Saturday, but Appleton is happy with the simplicity of the scenario which faces his side.

He said: “I would much prefer it to be that way – you just need to win a game of football.

“It’s a cup final and we get to play it in front of our own fans.

“You don’t get many opportunities like the one we’ve got coming up this weekend and you just hope the players grab it.”
