GEORGE Baldock says Kemar Roofe has nothing to feel sorry about after the forward became the latest Oxford United player to have his penalty saved.

Morecambe goalkeeper Barry Roche held on to Roofe’s weak effort from 12 yards in the 66th minute as the dominant U’s were held to a goalless draw at the Kassam Stadium.

Danny Hylton and Alex MacDonald have also seen spot-kicks saved this season, but Baldock stressed Roofe had nothing to apologise about given his contribution so far the season.

The full back said: “Roofey took the responsibility on his shoulders and all the crowd are looking at him in that particular moment.

“We’ve had other chances, so I don’t think he needs to apologise one bit.

“A lot of the emphasis will be on ‘if Kemar Roofe scores then we win’.

“He and Hylts have missed important penalties now, but they’ve also got us out of trouble a lot of times.

“They do so much for the team and it’s easy to dwell on penalty misses, but don’t forget Bristol Rovers, where he put one in from an unbelievable angle (to win the game 1-0).”

Baldock added: “I would back Roofey to score if he takes another one.

“He’s a confident lad and I’m sure he will be there on Monday working his socks off to put it right.”

United had plenty of opportunities to win the game despite the penalty miss, but could not find the breakthrough.

Liam Sercombe’s strike in the 1-1 draw against Portsmouth is the only goal they have scored in the last three games, but Baldock is confident United have enough firepower in the squad.

He said: “I’m very confident Ryan Taylor will come good.

“In training he has looked on fire this week and so has Paddy (Patrick Hoban), they both scored in the reserve game on Tuesday.

“We have James Roberts, who has looked a different player in recent weeks, so we have got good strikers.

“It’s not just them. Last week Sercs scored and we have to score from all departments, it’s not just the strikers at all.

“With the strength and depth we have in the squad I would expect us to score at home to Morecambe.”

For Morecambe it was a vast improvement defensively on their previous game, a 4-2 home defeat to Northampton Town.

Boss Jim Bentley said: “When called upon we knew Barry Roche was going to have to play well and he did with the penalty save being the key moment in the game.

“It’s a good, hard-earned, hard-working, professional, away performance against a top side.”
