Jonny Giles is relishing the chance to show what he can do as a professional footballer.

The 21-year-old signed a professional contract with Oxford United yesterday after impressing in two trial games and in training.

The left-winger has spent the last three years studying physics at Durham University, but caught the eye while playing for their first XI, as well as in a couple of games for Ashington in Northern League Division 1 last season.

Giles featured in trial matches for United against Aston Villa and Southampton, and can’t wait to try and make his mark.

“It was quite daunting the first time I stepped out with the rest of the lads, because you could instantly see their quality,” he said.

“It will clearly take time to get used to training each day and improving my fitness, but I am confident I will improve all the time and can’t wait.”

He added: “I only played a couple of games for Ashington, but it certainly helped to try and adjust to men’s football.”

United head coach Michael Appleton said: “He is quick, has ability on the ball and has done really well in training so deserves his chance.”

“He is still very young, but he looks to have a bright future.”
