Johnny Mullins is set to miss Oxford United’s final game of the season with concussion sustained in Saturday’s 2-0 win against Cambridge United.

The 29-year-old was briefly knocked out following a nasty fall in the first half and was carried off.

He is making a good recovery, but regulations governing head injuries where players lose consciousness mean Mullins is due to be ruled out of this weekend’s trip to Newport County.

Andrew Proctor, United’s physiotherapist, who treated the defender on the pitch, said: “Because of the concussion it’s highly unlikely we will see him again on the pitch this season.

“We have to follow guidelines and you have to go symptom-free through several stages of exercise.

“You are talking about four or five days’ worth of training before we can make a call.

“We will probably make the decision (today), but I think it would be highly unlikely he played.

“The way the guidelines are you can’t muck around.”

With Jake Wright struggling with a groin injury, it could see Andy Whing, who replaced Mullins, alongside Chey Dunkley at centre half on Saturday.
