RICHARD Hughes admits a Cherries promotion would be a special addition to his CV as he bids to surpass the other euphoric moments in his career.

Hughes, who tasted success as part of an FA Cup-winning squad with Portsmouth, has played in the Premier League, UEFA Cup and on the international stage.

The ex-Scotland midfielder has made 22 appearances this season after coming out of retirement to rejoin Cherries in the summer.

And the 33-year-old believes helping Cherries complete their promotion push would be “very sweet” and would stand proudly among his previous achievements.

Hughes told the Daily Echo: “It would be a fantastic achievement from the team and as far as team efforts go, it would be right up there.

“You can do things individually that you are pleased with but, in terms of team success, not many people get to sample that throughout their careers.

“When you have got a team ethic like we have here, it makes it all the more enjoyable to be a part of something successful.

“There is nothing I would want more than to be part of a successful Bournemouth team with this group of players and staff. In that respect, rank it as high as you like. If it did happen, because of the people I am working and playing with, it would be very special.

“Not having sampled promo tion there and then on the pitch or having been at a club at the time, it would be a new thing.

“The times at Portsmouth when we managed to stay up against all odds, we celebrated like we had won the league. Being part of an FA Cup-winning squad as well was a fantastic moment.

“I would imagine that it (promotion) is the culmination of achieving your goals. I am hoping that, maybe, it would sur prise me and be even better than those emotions that I experienced then, like qualifying for Europe.”

After leaving Portsmouth, Hughes reluctantly hung up his boots for 12 months before returning to Dean Court.

He added: “The season has gone miles better than I could have hoped for when I first came back because there were so many question marks at that time, in terms of fitness, sustaining fit ness and all sorts of other aspects.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed it. The main reason for that is because I have been injury-free, barring the spell after I injured my hamstring against Leyton Orient.

“There are so many technical and tactical aspects of the game that you can lose as well as your physical state. That took a while and I enjoyed the beginning of the season, even though the results were not what we wanted them to be.

“By the time I came back from the injury, the manager (Howe) was in charge and it has been a very positive place to work from then.”
