Major step forward for a long-awaited Tadley youth club after county donates land plot

A YOUTH club in Tadley is another step closer after Hampshire County Council agreed to gift a piece of land for the facility.

The land, adjacent to the community centre, in Newchurch Road, has been officially transferred to the borough council, which will then lease the land to Tadley and District Community Association.

The association has long been campaigning for the provision of a youth club. As reported in The Gazette last month, Tadley Town Council has lent its backing to the scheme, following an informal survey carried out by council chairman Councillor Jo Slimin and Cllr Warwick Lovegrove, which showed there was support for a youth club locally.

It has not yet been decided whether the facility will be a stand-alone building or an extension of the existing community centre.

The decision will depend on how much money can be raised by the association and what facilities are needed.

Hampshire County Council leader Cllr Ken Thornber decided to release the land at his decision day on March 14.

Cllr Marilyn Tucker, county councillor for Tadley and Baughurst, said “I am absolutely delighted. I have been working with officers of both the county and borough councils towards this end for a number of years.

“There are many young people now using the community centre, and for them to have a dedicated area for their use in the future will be marvellous.”
