The trial of 21-year-old Josh Lewis, who was accused of murdering Mujib Hakim and burying him in a shallow grave in the garden of his Merton Road home, resulted in a guilty verdict and a minimum 24-year sentence.

January also saw overweight residents told they may not be eligible for surgery until they shed the excess pounds.

The New Year got off to an irritating start for some Watford residents as a sanitation pump failure put a dampener on the Christmas spirit.

Meanwhile, high winds and torrential rain felled trees and damaged chimneys as well as prompting 200 reports of obstructions to the county’s road network.

Elsewhere a horse drowned in a Bushey field after an underground water pipe burst while diners in a branch of McDonalds were left shocked after spotting a fellow diner watching a pornographic film inside the restaurant.

The campaign for a second new school in WD3 also gathered momentum while army bomb disposal experts were called to West Watford to deal with a live hand grenade which was discovered in a garden shed.

January was also a tragic month for the friends and family of Parmiter’s School pupil Jan Henney who died after being struck by a bus in Garston Lane.

Watford mayor Dorothy Thornhill said she was subjected to an email death threat in connection with proposals to redevelop the top end of the town centre.
