THE first person Alex Ferguson saw when he arrived at the Manor Ground in November 1986 was Mick Thorne. The lifelong Manchester United fan from Botley waited for the squad to arrive so he could welcome Ron Atkinson’s successor. He said: “He got off the coach and I just said ‘congratulations on your appointment’. He shook my hand and walked straight into the ground.” Thorne has been following the club for half a century and became involved in the local branch of the Manchester United Supporters’ Club in 1975. Now 68, he helps organise two regular coaches of supporters going up to Old Trafford. He will be there on Sunday for Ferguson’s final home game, against Swansea City.

OXFORD United are celebrating after winning two awards. The club won the inaugural Johnstone’s Paint Pot Challenge and also scooped the League Two programme of the year prize. United’s players were the most accurate at chipping balls into an inflatable paint pot as part of promotional work for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. The reward was £2,000 in paint from the sponsors, which will be used to paint the concourses at the Kassam Stadium this summer as part of plans to improve the matchday experience. United’s revamped programme received the most votes from other League Two clubs.

Odds lengthen on Oxford United boss Wilder

SPECULATION linking Oxford United manager Chris Wilder to the Sheffield United job eased yesterday. The 45-year-old was made the 1-10 favourite by two bookmakers on Tuesday, but the market changed to make Motherwell manager Stuart McCall, another former player, the new front runner. Sheffield United are believed to be drawing up a shortlist, but the U’s only comment yesterday was that no approach had been received for Wilder, who drifted out to 4-1.
