Oxfordshire roared to the top of Division 1 of Riley’s British Inter-Counties Championship after thrashing West Midlands 29-10.

Oxon were level on points with their opponents at the start of the fixture, but soon left them trailing in their wake at their new base of Rileys in Cowley.

The home county got off to a great start on Saturday as their ladies B team recorded a 4-2 win, with Trina Blackman, lady-of-the- match Kim Ledbury (17.32 average), Nicola Curzon and Kelly Dutton all successful.

The men’s B team then produced one of their best-ever performances, taking their match 10-2 to make the overall score 14-4.

Their victories came from Nigel Russell, Graham Manning, Paul Champ, man-of-the-match Sean Holley (27.97), Lee Russell, John Russell, Neal Russell, Ian Moss, Phil Addison and Antony Barrett on his debut.

The home county were in confident mood on Sunday and any hopes of a West Midlands revival were firmly quashed as Oxon’s ladies A team put in a quality performance to run out 6-0 victors.

Lady of the match Deta Hedman (20.31), Sandra Cox, Linda Jones, Leanne Jennings, Karen Williams and Julie Newman provided their wins.

The men’s A rubbed further salt into their opponents’ wounds as Andy Thomas, Dan Butler, Roger Haines, Stuart Dutton and Mark Thomson made the score 25-4.

West Midlands battled back to grab the next six games, before man-of-the-match Jon Jukes (29.94) captured the last to tie the men’s A game at 6-6 and make the final score 29-10 (including three bonus points).

It put the seal on one of Oxfordshire’s biggest-ever wins.

Meanwhile, entries for the Greene King ODDA Winter League must be in by October 9. No entries will be accepted after that date.

The ODDA's Summer League finals will be at Rover Cowley SC on Friday, November 19.
