Carterton's Alan Prew quest to become Oxfordshire singles champion was finally realised with a convincing 21-9 win over Banbury Borough’s Mark Sykes on finals day at Oxford City & County.

Prew, a three-times runner-up, put together a run of 13 winning ends without reply to leave himself one short of the title.

Three twos from Sykes held up the proceedings before the Carterton man scored the shot needed to collect the Champion’s Rose Bowl.

Sykes had already put one title under his belt in the morning session, winning the fours crown with Borough clubmates Andrew Buttress, George Moon and Greg Moon.

They swept aside Bicester’s Robert Pink, John Thompson, Martin Workman and Paul Hooley 21-12 after winning 15 of the 21 ends.

Sykes went on to complete a title double in the new two-wood singles with a 16-13 win over Carterton’s Stuart Rich-ens.

Richens and clubmates Robbie Clanfield and Baden Sparkes had earlier been on the wrong end of a thrilling triples final result, which saw Headington’s trio of Colin Whitehead, Nathan Lewis and Howard Watts triumph 19-17 on an extra end.

A five on the seventh end saw the Carterton side lead 12-3 only for them to lose the next four ends and see their advantage cut to 12-10.

With only two ends left, Headington still trailed by four shots, but they picked up a three and a single to force an extra end, which they won.

The only other time they had led was after the first end.

An all-Headington pairs final saw John Philpott and Ian Snowdon dethrone defending champions Lewis and Mark Charlett 23-17.

With a 16-7 lead at 12 ends, Philpott and Snowdon were given a fright when their opponents picked up a single and a seven to see their advantage slashed to one shot.

However, they kept their cool to clinch a six-shot victory.

Watlington’s Sam Watts, in only his second year of competitive bowling, raced to a 21-2 win against Carterton’s Dan Wakeman in the under 25 singles final.

The Carterton man could not match Watts’s steady drawing game in a match that was over after 13 ends.
