Abingdon School ruled supreme with a clean sweep in the boys’ races at the Oxfordshire Schools’ Cross Country Championships at Radley College.

Nat Jones set the ball rolling by winning the junior race over 4.6k from teammate Michael Fabes, with Ben Claridge (King Alfred’s, Wantage) third.

Thomas Kelly made it an Abingdon double by taking the 5.8k intermediate event from Chris Hewitt (St Birinus, Didcot), who was finishing runner-up for the second successive year.

Christian von Eitzen (European, Culham), junior champion for the last two years, had to settle for the minor honours.

And Alistair Duff, runner-up in the 7.5k senior race 12 months ago, went one better when leading home a one-two from teammate Stuart Jones, with Mitchell Lomas (King Alfred’s, Wantage) third.

Not surprisingly, Abingdon’s individual heroics also helped the school repeat last year’s team treble.

In the girls’ races, Headington’s Beth Swords completed a hat-trick of wins by retaining her senior crown.

Swords, who 12 months ago foiled prolific Gosford Hill runner Melissa Hawtin’s bid for a title six-timer, this time defeated her sister, Lauren Hawtin (Cherwell), last year’s intermediate champion and 2008 junior winner, in the 4.1k event, with Beth Warne (Oxford High) third.

It saw Swords add two senior titles to her intermediate success of 2010 when she also beat Lauren Hawtin.

Beth Hawtin, the youngest of the three sisters, also completed a title treble.

Junior champion for the last two years, she continued her dominance when stepping up to intermediate level over 3.4k by racing home clear of Victoria Mobley (Tudor Hall) in a repeat of the placings of the last two years’ under 15 events.

Sophie Lloyd (King Alfred’s) was third.

Chipping Norton’s Megan Humphries, who took the minor honours behind Beth Hawtin and Mobley 12 months ago, went two places better in the junior race over 2.9k.

She came home ahead of St Helen & St Katharine, Abingdon, pair Fiona Bunn and Flora Insley.

The top eight in each race now qualify to represent Oxfordshire in the English Schools’ Championships at Ilton, Somerset on Saturday, March 17.
