SWIMMERS from the Dragon School, Oxford made history by bringing back two trophies from the English Primary Schools Championship finals at Ponds Forge, Nottingham.

Pride of place place went to the Dragon’s under 11 boys team, who shared the overall honour with Bedford Prep.

“This is a fantastic achievement for the boys’ team to be overall ESSA champions for the first time in our history,” said Richard Thorpe, the school’s head of swimming.

Their other cup came from the boys 4x25 freestyle relay team, who qualified fastest and held their nerve to pip Warwick by a meagre six hundredths of a second.

The boys 4x25m medley relay swam the fastest time of the day in their heat in 1.06.99secs – a school record by 2.5secs – but were unable to maintain their form in the final, coming third.

The Dragon’s girls’ 4x25m freestyle relay made the A final, coming a creditable fourth in 61.03 secs.
